Like Romeo and Juliet, it doesn’t have a happy ending, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a great, accessible story with a hero’s quest hidden inside. First and foremost, Hamlet is a mystery, and students will become detectives following Hamlet’s set of clues even while they wonder whether or not he’s gone a bit crazy as he talks gibberish around the halls of Elsinore Castle. They will act out scenes, decide whether to fence or not to fence with foam swords, and try to save characters in order to give them a happier ending than Shakespeare’s play may provide. As always, the emphasis is on using Hamlet as a way to introduce students to the basics of the theatre and encourage them to use their imaginations to create a crazy castle where a ghost could hang out and some rag-tag actors can put on a play that just might reveal a murderer… In other words, Hamlet may be a tragedy, but we’ll still manage to have a bit of fun. |
